Navigating Time, Space, and Play

In location-based geogames, players physically move around in geographical space. The game mechanics are based on a very simple principle: game actions are only possible in certain locations. This makes locomotion a central element of the game. In the design of these locomotion games, the temporal aspect is no less important than the spatial aspect. In my talk, I will explore the challenges of designing location-based geogames on the ludic, narrative and performative levels. Based on an overview of game design patterns, including pre-digital ones, I will discuss findings on the significance of time for game play. The role of time also has implications for the appropriation of space. I will argue that location-based games are best associated with non-territorial conceptualizations of space, according to which geographical space can be playfully endowed with a variety of semantics. This will be illustrated with examples from game-based learning for sustainable development.

Geo & Games – Using Geodata to build Serious Games for Education, Health and Participation

Games are fun – entertaining players and fascinating researchers. 80% of all information is geo-referenced. Let’s combine it and use geodata for GeoGames and Serious Games.
The talk starts with a retrospective illustrating the project examples 80Days and GEIST (engl.: ghost) in the field of game-based learning and tourism. Then, current research and development activities of the Serious Games research group at TU Darmstadt are presented, among others the creation and use of a 3D city model for student recruitment, health and participation.
